2018/11 - PP CHAIR  |  PLASTIC WASTE

Background

Plastic products are more and more popular but difficult to be degraded. Even though plastic recycling has been done, it's not universal. The global utilization rate of recycled plastics is 25%, while only 14% in China. Many cases abroad are collected and shipped to China to be processed into new products.

On this premise, human life produced the most waste PP, PET plastic, which are usually made into particles for daily use directly contact human bodies for the first time. Most are in physical recycling and made into commodities, furniture and other products. However, the physical recycling way contains too many steps. Few people are willing to make the effort to recycle plastic because of the higher cost and time.

Target & Design Process

Take PP and PET as the main research objects. Improve the physical recycling method to explore a new material and new process to improve the existing plastic recycling method.

Test if the materials combined with some other materials can be used in important fields again and replace those materials that are easy to cause pollution to the environment. It reminds me of 3D print. There are many materials available for 3D printers, which have a wide range of applications. Perhaps the new materials studied in this project can be applied to 3D printers so that it can reduce steps to save time and cost.

The amount of plastic waste produced in public places is quite similar. I hope to make the public realize the significance and feasibility of plastic recycling by designing seats made of recycled plastic for public places.

Material Testing

Tools, containers and different types of daily waste plastic that I collected from plastic waste recycling station for the experiments.

First Round Test

A total of 40 groups were made. The combination of PP and PET is the most worthy aspect of this experimental group.

Second Round Test

The combination of PP and PET in different proportions is focused in this round.

Although PP and PET cannot be completely integrated, the combination can give play to both their strengths.

PET can improve the strength, modulus, heat resistance and surface hardness of PP. PP, on the other hand, can improve the processing, impact, environmental stress cracking resistance and barrier properties of PET, and effectively solve the recycling problem of two kinds of waste plastics.

Design Process

The world of pollution is like a dark cloud hanging over our heads- thr common way of expressing frustration in cartoons, a familiar caricature of depression. If there is a way to take that “cloud” and turn it into something useful for humanity, that would be a good direction.

Dimensional feature of leisure seats in public places

 · Without high backrest

 · The lines on the surface of the chair are a little uneven. Only for users for a short time to rest, increase the mobility of use.

Color Selection

One is the feeling of plants breaking ground. It means to add a little bit of green to the city.

The second is volcanic eruption. The whole process of my project is like a process of combustion and rebirth.

Modeling

Commercial value

 · Reduce the processing steps of the machine to improve the processing rate, save the production time and labor cost of the factory.

 · The field of plastic recycling is still not widely promoted, the market has great potential to be developed.

 · 3D printing is fast, saves materials, and has no assembly costs, thus reducing production costs for the company and increasing profits.

 · The user demand is large, providing the market demand for the company.
