2017/12 - THE MONITY  |  GLACIER LOSS MEMORIAL HALL

This installation art is designed to appeal the public to pay more attention to glacier loss - a serious environmental problem that few people notice.

Background

Inspired by the photo of Pete Saloutos, the glaciers on the coast melt into a unique shape, which is of interest to the melting of glaciers. It was caused by global warming, which also leads to flood, wildlife animals lost their habitat, water shortage crisis and germs emergence.

I hope to make a related installation art that calls for attention to environmental issues such as melting glaciers.

 · Tourist spot for more people to visit

 · The water of Gullfoss-Hvitarvatn comes from Langjokull, so this memorial hall will help visitors better understand the seriousness of the glacier loss.

 · It is set near grass, not in the crater location because of the stable geology.

Location:

Golden Circle, Iceland

The design of the shape is inspired by the shape of the dorsal fin of the killer whale and the shape of the glacier, which extracts the most suitable shape between the two, and fits the theme of the influence of the environment on the various states of nature.

Shape Design

As the sun moves, the angle of the light varies. Referring to the treatment of light in a number of churches, through the design of the structure of the device, the interior is transparent, allowing the viewer to have a deeper understanding of the subject matter.

Interior Display

Material: marble

Solid, not easily damaged by wind and rain

White, the color blends well with the surrounding environment

Each marble monument is engraved with different effects on the nature and human society at different heights. The shadows of different positions will be aggravated by the sunlight at different moments, and the viewing experience of visitors will be visually enhanced.

The ground is modeled on the texture of the ice, allowing people to feel the coldness of the ice while enjoying the sun.

The ice seats inside the pavilion and the outdoor irregular ice seats are for people to rest, so they feel the sense of crisis in which the polar bears are gradually reduced.

Molding

The 100:1 installation model was built with cardboard to test the light transmission capability inside.
