2019/10 - ABSORBABLE DICE | SHELL WASTE

Inspired by the Shell Kitchen Midden in the Stone Age and the piled-up shell mound, a material exploration project to find the value of the waste shell and turn it into a piece of useful furniture in an environmental-friendly way has been developed.

Background

Molluck shells contain 75-90% Calcium Carbonate. After the recyceled process from Machine Grinding to Burn (Refine), shells can be refined to Calcium Carbonate powder. And because of its porous fibrou double helix structure and inorganic properties, it has various functions, such as air purification (absorb formaldehyde, odor and sound), anti-bacterial and fire prevention.

To be environmentally-friendly, natural glues can be considered as the combination of Calcium Carbonate powder, including animal glues and plant-made glues. It's also a way to

Design process

Based on the properties of Calcium Carbonate, a product can be designed by using to solve air qualities problem.

When it comes to choosing the glues, animal glues like fish skin and hide can be compared with plant-made glue like sticky rice. The reason why I choose fish skin, hide and sticky rice is because they are daily materials. Hide can be the material of dog chewing sticks and sticky rice is a main material as glue for building up the Great Wall in ancient China.

I try to test the best proportion of mixing different types of glues and Calcium Carbonate to make the product more stable and durable.

By exploring the pattern of acoustic insulation panels, the project aim to design a new pattern that has functions of absorbing sound, odor and other harmful particles and gases at home.

· Fish glue failed for the wrong temperature

· Sticky rice is not as good as Cowhide glue, it’s less stable and easy to mold.

· A propriate proportion of Cowhide glue and Calcium Carbonate is between 1:1 to 2:1.

This product is designed to make good use of the functions of Calcium Carbonate and show that shell waste can be turned into the powder to make different shape.

Besides, to attract people to buy it, Besides, to attract people to buy it, I change the idea of making an air purifier but a furniture that can absorb harmful substance. That also can sustitute the flakeboard furniture
